Katherine Xiao was born into a family of calligraphers in Beijing. Her grandfather was a famous calligrapher and poet Xiao Lao. At the age of nine, she began to learn calligraphy. At the age of 13, her works were selected into large-scale exhibitions in China and Japan. She graduated from university in 1985 and has lived and worked in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Washington, Taipei, Shanghai, Singapore, and Beijing. While inheriting traditional calligraphy, she absorbed the essence of modern art from the East and West, blending traditional calligraphy with modern aesthetics, and successfully created a unique “modern cursive” art form.
