Filipe Cortez graduated with a dual degree from the University of Porto majoring in Fine Arts. He current lives and works in Porto, Portugal. Cortez works within the fields of painting, sculpture, and site-specific installation examining memory and space of architectural spaces. He believes the environment bears traces of aging and degradation of the architectural body, accentuating cracks, holes and imperfections.


In 2011, Cortez won the first prize of the Second International Painting Biennial in Coimbra, Portugal, and the second grant at the 9th Bienal Internacional de Arte Jovem de Vila Verde. In 2015, Cortez completed a 6-month artist residency at Residency Unlimited New York and many collaborations with galleries and curators have sprouted from this program. In 2017, Cortez completed his second artist residency program in STUPIN Taipei.
