A first peek of the new hospital design is visible on the corner of 52nd and Dover streets, across from the inpatient hospital, where crews recently finished Temescal Hall, a three-story administrative building for doctors, nurses and other staff.
The building is nature-inspired, with exposed wooden beams and painted in cool greens and blues. It's meant to be a quiet spot for care providers to work on medical records, meet with colleagues or take a break. An abstract mural in the lobby, painted by Oakland artist Adia Millett, appears to show a warm sun setting over water and pebbles.
Outside, the same artist designed an abstract mosaic mural that was mounted on an upper corner of the building, so it's visible to patients and families across the street in the neonatal intensive care unit. The piece features blues and greens and silvers that sparkle in the sunlight and seem to represent waves or water; the colors complement the "Temescal" mural painted on a nearby freeway overpass, welcoming visitors to the Oakland neighborhood.
"I was just thinking what would be inspirational for them? What would bring them joy, hope?" Millett said. "I wanted an image that was abstract enough, but also created an entrance for a story that hopefully could live on beyond their experience and their parents' experiences while they're here."
