Discovering Hzing: Pswagi Temahahoi (2022) is part of Ciwas Tahos’ ongoing project Finding Pathways to Temahahoi, first conceived in 2020. The project centers on Temahahoi, an Atayal oral story of a “women’s village” inhabited solely by women and gender-diverse people. Its residents communicate with bees that protect them from outsiders. They sustain themselves on steam and smoke, and become impregnated by sunbathing on rocks while allowing the wind to enter them. For Ciwas, Temahahoi is a space of queer historical knowledge and ongoing resistance. The survival of this mystical place depends on the health of the natural ecosystem—both a warning and a prophecy. Here, the bee is not a metaphor but a political entity: a non-human ally that guards the community from intrusion. The wind is not a poetic image but a symbol of reproductive autonomy.
In Atayal, Pswagi Temahahoi is composed of three parts: P signals the future, S marks the instrumental form, and wagi means “sun”, with pswagi casting light as an instrument and foreshadowing an imminent unfolding through light and shadow.
Discovering Hzing: Pswagi Temahahoi (2022) is an experimental documentary video work that follows the path taken by Atayal Elder Yumin, who uses pswagi, to trace the locations of wild bees. Alongside, a performance piece with Ciwas’ self-invented ceramic sound sculpture as a way to relocate the space of Temahahoi through collective queer breath.
