How are we trained to see? And what happens when we try to see differently?

In The Trained Eye, Wu Jiaru brings together painting, moving image, sculpture, and installation to explore how meaning takes shape. Drawing from mythology, literature, personal memories, and moments encountered while moving through the city, her works inhabit the shifting territory between observation and imagination, where histories are continually rewritten and stories remain open to interpretation.

At the heart of the exhibition is a process of unlearning. Through intuitive mark-making, layered projections, found images, and speculative narratives, Wu examines the habits that shape how we look, remember, and make sense of the world. Moving between fact and fiction, bodily memory and improvisation, The Trained Eye invites viewers into a space where certainty gives way to curiosity, and seeing becomes an ongoing act of questioning.
