Yuen Nga Chi's three-channel video installation Statue and Sea (2019-2023/2026) and photograph Spot (2023) are part of Crash, Crush, a group exhibition at the Beijing Inside-Out Art Museum co-curated by Li Huiyi and Cao Liyao.

The exhibition brings together works by 28 artists and collectives from China, South Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Georgia, and elsewhere. Beginning from the situation we inhabit in China, it opens onto other artistic contexts that carry related historical experiences and emotional structures. Although these artists work from distinct realities, their practices resonate with our present in different ways. Together, they reveal a structure of feeling that can be recognized across contexts.

Yuen Nga Chi previously worked as a photographer at a zoo and has also made long-term photographic records of animal sculptures. For her, photography is not simply a means of capturing an object, but an ongoing process of searching. Beginning with the observation of animals, her practice traces their shifting relationships with humans, the city, and bodies of water.
Through slow-moving images and intermittent narration, the film preserves spaces of silence and ambiguity. Following the traces left by what remains absent, it examines the historical conditions through which an event takes shape. Rather than dwelling on the moment when an accident occurs, the work continues to ask what precedes it: how do the lives of fishermen, urban development, ecological change, and collective memory gradually transform over time, and under what conditions do these intertwined processes ultimately come to be recognized as "Crash, Crush"?
