Landing on the East

The moon’s gravity shapes the tides. Framed as an astronaut “landing mission,” the project uses tidal movement and its transitional states to reflect how Hong Kong has been propelled by recurring waves of migration — some choose to stay, while others drift on.
As second-generation migrants settled in Hong Kong, the artists consider identity as fluid, referencing the illegal-immigration surge of the 1970s–80s and the post-1997 emigration wave following the handover.
Political tensions sparked a new wave of emigration. Many still commuted back to Hong Kong for work, giving rise to the term “astronaut” for those constantly moving between two places.

Landing on the East was first presented at the Hong Kong Arts Centre as part of HKAC Creators for Tomorrow. Conceived by Tang Kwong San and Yuen Nga Chi, the project imagines astronauts on a “landing mission” to re-examine an unfamiliar Hong Kong. Filmed on Tung Ping Chau, Hong Kong’s easternmost island and a historic stopover for people seeking a new life, the work reflects on Hong Kong as a place of passage between two shores. Through photography, video, and installation, it assembles “evidence” gathered along visitor-filled shorelines — discarded objects and remnants from the beach — and draws parallels between the island and the moon to create an otherworldly space where the familiar becomes strange.
