Fung Ming Chip

"Drawriting!" Published by Taoyuan City Museum of Fine Arts

Taoyuan City Children's Art Museum held a special exhibition "Drawriting!" in July 2021, featuring the works of artist Fung Ming Chip and six other calligraphy artists and artists. The exhibition album "Drawriting!" was then published by Taoyuan City Museum of Fine Arts, which includes the introduction of exhibition works and interactive designs, as well as artist introductions. Fung Ming Chip's work "Music Script 1, Still Night" (2015) was also included. Fung is determined to expand the possibility of ink by experimenting with modernized methods – deconstructing and reassembling lines and strokes, playing with different ink tones and compositional arrangements. Starting from the concept of "calligraphy and painting are of the common origin", uses lines, a method for children to express themselves, line links "writing" and "painting" together, explaining that although the pens used in calligraphy and painting may be different, "lines" application and representation have established a close connection between them. Fung Ming Chip's dynamic works serve as both visual art and highlights as musical pieces.

About Fung Ming Chip --

Self-taught, Fung Ming Chip is primarily an artist of the word: essayist, novelist, poet, playwright, Zhuan-Ke (seal carving) and Shu-Fa (calligraphy). He was born in Guangdong, raised in Hong Kong and moved to New York City in his mid-20s. Sensing the artist within since childhood, his encounter with visual arts in Manhattan and beyond re-awakened this spirit.

Time and space are the two hands on a clock in Fung’s decades long engagement with Shu-Fa. Over the past three decades, Fung has created more than a hundred unique script styles, reinventing traditional calligraphy with a novel and radical vision.
