Speaking with or using one's hands is, in the first instance, a form of communication. Hands are as well instruments of individual expression and also – collective mediums of exchange in terms of the differing cultural codes that are used. In the process of industrialization, the involvement of the hands has decreased – our environment has become preponderantly incorporeal. But still, the hand remains a symbol of touch and of the creative act.

The work "Mach dich selbst (Do It Yourself)" (2015) by Michael Müller shows the hands of the artist, interacting with each other. Each hand alternates between forming and being formed by the other hand, that models a temporary sculpture out of the living material before exchanging the roles and start from the beginning. What becomes visible is the shift from object to subject, stressing the fact that identity is something that is being formed by ourselves and the choices we make – rather than identity as something that was already existing.
