Kongkee

The Asia Pivot

Kongkee is featured in The Asia Pivot's "Talentspotter"!

As reviewed by Vivienne Chow: "Born Kong Khong-chang in Malaysia, Kongkee grew up in Hong Kong and embarked on an unconventional artistic journey before landing exhibitions at prominent institutions and galleries. After graduating from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and receiving his M.F.A. from the City University of Hong Kong, Kongkee first created illustrations, comics, and animation. His work appeared in local magazines, and he served as an art director of the homegrown literary magazine Fleurs des Lettres. He collaborated with Britpop outfit Blur in 2015 for the comic book Travel to Hong Kong with Blur. He then developed Dragon’s Delusion, a sci-fi animated project that reflects on modern-day sociopolitical issues by referencing ancient Chinese history.

"As comics, animation, and manga have entered the fine-art sphere in recent years, attention has grown for Kongkee. In 2022, he had a major institutional solo show, “Kongkee: Warring States Cyberpunk,” at the Asia Art Museum of San Francisco, which then toured to Wrightwood 659 in Chicago and Tai Kwun in Hong Kong. Kongkee was awarded the “Asia Game Changer West Award” by Asia Society Northern California in 2024. He also held a gallery solo show at Hong Kong’s gdm earlier this year.

"Up next: Kongkee is featured in the 18th Istanbul Biennial, on view through November 23. He also recently opened his first institutional solo in Japan, “Kongkee: Electric Heart Beat,” at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa, which is on view through March 22, 2026."
