Liu Kuo-Sung

Space Series Featured in Para Site's "Garden of Six Seasons"

Liu Kuo-Sung's "The Ring B" (1973) is featured in Para Site's group exhibition "One Garden Six Seasons" at their art space in Quarry Bay and Soho House in Sheung Wan, Hong Kong. On view from May 16 to August 30, 2020.

Liu Kuo-Sung is widely regarded as the “Father of Modern Ink Painting”. In the 1950s, he founded the “Fifth Moon Group” in Taiwan, seen as the beginning of the Taiwanese modern art movement. In the late 50s, Liu started experimenting with a mixture of Chinese and Western materials, attempting to fuse the atmospheres of oil and ink painting. Personal interest and exploration permeate his paintings, and diverse cosmologies are connected through an innovative use of paper, style, and paint. From 1972 to 1992, Liu was the Dean of the Faculty of Arts at Chinese University of Hong Kong, and his understanding of painting made an impact in the Hong Kong art scene as a whole. “The Ring B” – This 1973 work is among his Space series, inspired by the iconic Blue Marble photo of the Earth taken by the crew of Apollo 17 only the year prior. Liu’s work shows the striking encounter between millennia of imagination about our planetary home and our stunned actual view of it from a cosmic distance.
