This year marks ACC Hong Kong's milestone 40th anniversary. Established in 1986, the Hong Kong office was created by a group of like-minded art enthusiasts to offer more personal and professional development opportunities to artists and arts professionals.
Wu Jiaru specially selected this artwork as a 40th birthday present to ACC Hong Kong. The painting is part of a series that the artist developed while she was on her Fellowship in New York and thinking back to Hong Kong. New York was sometimes called "Bird York"(鳥約)in retro Cantonese slang, since the word for "bird" can sound like "new." The image also references and reinterprets the legacy of Bada Shanren, the ink painting master who was born four centuries ago this year. By employing oil paint on reflective fabric, she contemplates the possibilities of Asian and Western art. Though the painting can be appreciated as is, flash photography yields a whimsical "surprise" image.
