Kongkee’s immersive video installation River (2026) is a part of Myths and Monsters: The Art of Fantasy in Asia at M+ Museum, co-curated by Isabella Tam and Ulanda Blair.
Myths and Monsters: The Art of Fantasy in Asia
Exhibition period: 17 October 2026 – 4 April 2027
Venue: M+ Museum West Gallery, L2
The works on display at Myths and Monsters: The Art of Fantasy in Asia span from the nineteenth to the twenty-first century, including classical traditions such as Japanese Ukiyo-e woodblock prints and Tibetan Buddhist scrolls, modern manga and anime, and the aesthetics of fantasy in our contemporary culture. Imagination is presented as a potent creative tool in Myths and Monsters, with stories, characters and worlds as an artistic response to sociopolitical conditions.
Expanding Kongkee’s meditation on time and transformation, River introduces a central protagonist as an avatar of humanity caught in the current of history. The river is a site of memory and rebirth, and it also represents the moving impact of shifting political powers, wars, as well as the explosive development of technology. As the protagonist drifts through the blood-orange waters, he passes by nostalgic fragments of Hong Kong, begging the question of our collective future.
