Establishing the Realm Within, Hanling Museum of Art's inaugural exhibition, traces the development of modern and contemporary Chinese abstraction and probes its "Easternness." Moving beyond established definitions, it features pivotal figures in modern Chinese abstract art, and offer a more inclusive lens on contemporary Chinese abstraction.
Wu Shan has long investigated lacquer's materiality and the structures of visual language. Through repeated layering, polishing, and time's slow sedimentation, he arrives at a pared-back response. His lines-light, restrained-suggest a self-withdrawing stance, stripping away excess to leave only essential structure and perception. Across built-up lacquer surfaces, subtle marks and a controlled palette hold a quiet firmness. He often adopts titles from Kunqu, using them as prompts that invite open associations with rhythm and atmosphere.
