About Warring States Cyberpunk and Dragon's Delusion
Kongkee: Warring States Cyberpunk, curated by Abby Chen for the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, premiered in 2022 and toured to Wrightwood 659, Chicago, in 2023. Later that year, it was presented at Tai Kwun Contemporary, Hong Kong, co-curated by Ying Kwok and Chen, reframing the project for local audiences.
Originally conceived as a comic series in 2013, Warring States Cyberpunk transports viewers into an imagined world where past and future collide. Part comic book, part moving image, and part speculative journey, Kongkee: Warring States Cyberpunk unfolds as an immersive experience, presenting Kongkee's animation through multi-screen videos, wall projections, neon installations, vivid graphic works, narrative texts, and ancient Chinese objects.
The exhibition tells the story of legendary poet Qu Yuan, who lived during the Warring States Period (c. 481-221 BCE), as his soul journeys from the ancient Chu Kingdom to a retro-futuristic Asia where he is reborn as an android in a psychedelic cyberpunk landscape. Screened in the exhibition, the animation film Dragon's Delusion (2017-2020) begins in the aftermath of Qu Yuan's tragic death by drowning-an act of despair amid the turmoil of his time. Kongkee reimagines the poet's resurrection 2,000 years later, rising from the waters of the Kingdom of Chu into a cyberpunk future.
