Musquiqui Chihying's solo exhibition Musquiqui Chihying: A Life of Navigation at Hayward Gallery is featured in Art Emperor
Musquiqui Chihying presents a solo exhibition at the Hayward Gallery in the UK, using a distinctly Taiwanese sense of humor to reflect on how technological change reshapes people and everyday life.
Presented in the Hayward Gallery's HENI Project Space-a platform dedicated to introducing emerging and international artists to UK audiences-the exhibition brings together four works spanning different phases of Chihying's practice: The Jog, a video work that responds to urban life through seemingly absurd bodily actions; Toyota, which combines an inflatable installation and photography, beginning with an old car carrying family memories to consider the city and experiences of movement; an extended project from Annotation, which takes taxi drivers' navigation systems as a point of entry into AI technologies and data labeling; and the new work The Player, focused on Nigerian game "boosting" workers. Moving from urban experience and transportation to AI and digital labor, the works ask how people orient themselves-and re-adapt their lives-within rapidly shifting technological environments.
Chihying observes, "Although these works may seem to address very different subjects, they all revolve around how people face constantly changing environments." He hopes UK audiences, while engaging questions of technology and labor, will also register the works' Taiwanese humor-slightly absurd, yet deeply sincere.
