Publication Launch "Stay Connected: Art and China Since 2008"

Works by Liu Sheng highlighted in Stay Connected: Art and China Since 2008, jointly published by Tai Kwun Contemporary and Asia Art Archive.

Stay Connected: Art and China Since 2008 explores the trajectory of contemporary art in and around China following the 2008 Beijing Olympics, utilizing a set of guiding keywords to examine how structural transformations have altered the conditions for artistic practice while showcasing artists' responses to China's evolving role within the global landscape. The publication highlights local and regional viewpoints to enrich academic research and raise public awareness about China's art scene.

"Born in the 1970s, Liu Sheng has only recently come to wider attention. His painterly idiom and thematic focus differ markedly from the increasingly abstract tendencies of younger artists. Remaining focused on specific communities, he immerses himself in their lives over time to move beyond the position of an outsider. Through a method that fuses realism and fantasy, Liu constructs nuanced psychological portraits of rural laborers." — Ariadne Long Yun (Associate Curator, Visual Art at M+ Museum)
