Michael Müller

"Fragmenta in lumine" at Eberbach Monastery

Michael Müller has designed three large-scale stained glass windows for the basilica of Eberbach Monastery, which will be unveiled on May 5. Thematically and in terms of motif, the windows draw on aspects of the room-spanning painting Der geschenkte Tag (The Given Day, 2021–25), which is on view at the Neues Museum Berlin until April 2027.

The accompanying exhibition Fragmenta in lumine, which will be shown from May to September in the monks' dormitory of the former Cistercian monastery, presents paintings, drawings, and sculptures. The exhibition delves into the themes of the fragment as well as presence and absence – the central concepts behind the designs for the windows, which were realized in collaboration with Derix Glasstudios. Fragmenta in lumine places the abstract stained glass windows within the broader context of Müller’s oeuvre and illuminates the conceptual and artistic background that, in close dialogue with this unique location, led to the creation of the windows.
