Adia Millett will be featured in Saint Joseph’s Arts Foundation’s exhibition, "Packing and Cracking: The Art of (and Response to) Gerrymandering" opening on 17 September 2024 in San Francisco.
This exhibition, curated by Martin Strickland, Director of the Saint Joseph’s Art Foundation, and conceived by Rich Silverstein, Co-Founder at Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, features quilts and fiber-based artworks that explore the effects of gerrymandering on communities across the United States. Over 40 artworks by thirteen Bay Area artists are showcased alongside six original quilts commissioned by Rich Silverstein, all addressing the issue of gerrymandering.
This massive exhibition offers a powerful response to the political consequences faced by communities across the country. The Bay Area has a rich history of using craft as political dissent, and these works highlight the care, legacy, and tradition of quilting and textile-based art within this context. By exploring gerrymandering through textile art, the works presented illustrate how this practice has historically marginalized communities and undermined their basic rights.
