Artist Adia Millett collaborates with nonprofit organization Project Backboard on a special Oakland basketball court mural, a large-scale site-specific artwork on a public basketball court in Lowell Park, California. Project Backboard hopes to strengthen communities, improve park safety, encourage multi-generational play, and inspire people to think more critically and creatively about their environment.
Millett's mural, entitled "Taking Flight" (2023), as a kite or a basketball takes flight, features colorful designs representing the spirit of the neighborhood. She worked closely with Project Backboard to develop the concepts and finalize the designs during studio visits. The mural was applied using special court-surfacing paints to withstand weathering from play. Project Backboard hopes the vibrant artwork will encourage residents of all ages to enjoy the renewed space. The project is sponsored by actress Zendaya, who is also from Oakland.
