Galerie du Monde is delighted to share our Bay Area artist Cathy Lu was granted the SECA award and her site-specific installation is currently showcasing at SFMOMA.
Inspired by Nüwa, a Chinese creation goddess, Lu’s installation cascades from the ceiling in garlands of long-nailed hands and corner-store fruits, all deftly shaped from clay. The work extends Lu’s interest in manipulating Chinese cultural references to deconstruct assumptions about Asian American identity.
The award was established by the SFMOMA in 1967 and is reserved for artists who have “not, at the time of nomination, been accorded substantial recognition from a major institution,” according to the museum. Every two years since then, the institution has recognized five emerging Bay Area artists with an exhibition at the museum and an accompanying publication.
