Galerie du Monde is pleased to present “Contemporary Calligraphy”, a curated exhibition featuring 3 ink artists -- Katherine Xiao, Fung Ming Chip and Qin Feng. The exhibition on view through September 3, 2018.
Katherine Xiao (b.1963, Beijing) was born into a family of calligraphers. Her grandfather was a famous calligrapher and poet Xiao Lao. At the age of nine, she began to learn calligraphy. At the age of 13, her works were selected into large-scale exhibitions in China and Japan. She graduated from university in 1985 and has lived and worked in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Washington, Taipei, Shanghai, Singapore, and Beijing. While inheriting traditional calligraphy, she absorbed the essence of modern art from the East and West, blending traditional calligraphy with modern aesthetics, and successfully created a unique “modern cursive” art form.
Fung Ming Chip (b.1951, Guangdong) is an artist who studies and focuses on language: prose, novels, poetry, engraving and calligraphy. Born in Guangdong, he grew up in Hong Kong and moved to New York in the mid-20s. He lives in Hong Kong. He was influenced by art since childhood, and in Manhattan, visual art reinvigorated his spiritual world, responding to his unique way of writing and writing with seals and Chinese calligraphy. Feng’s work is housed in a number of important private and institutional collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Sydney White Rabbit Contemporary Art Collection, and the Israel Museum. In 2008, he created the tableware for “Les Poemes du Mandarin” for Hermes.
Qin Feng (b. 1961, Xinjiang) graduated from the Shandong Academy of Arts and Crafts in 1985. He taught at the Berlin University of the Arts in 1996-1999. He founded the Beijing Museum of Contemporary Art in 2007 and taught at the Central Academy of Fine Arts as a graduate tutor. In 2008, he was a contemporary art researcher at the Fairbank Chinese Research Center at Harvard University. The artist lives and works in Shanghai. Qin Feng’s works have been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. They are also housed in a number of important private and institutional collections, including the British Museum in London, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Asia Pacific Museum in Los Angeles, and Harvard University Art Gallery and Yale University Art Gallery.
