Overview

Peng Yi-Hsuan’s practice spans painting, video, and sculpture, often engaging everyday found objects to question and reflect on the nature of materiality. Transitioning from traditional media to an ongoing exploration of mixed media, Peng frequently adopts a “modernologio” perspective, tracing the historical trajectories and cultural significance embedded in the objects he selects. Through a dialectical process of decontextualization, he investigates the possibility of constructing a history of 'neutral objects' within the specific sociocultural context of Taiwan. By substituting one object for another, he reveals alternative perspectives, systems of use, and modes of practice.

Since 2014, Peng has developed a series of works using whiteboards as a medium, exploring their inherent quality of being easy to write on and erase. He uses gestures such as scraping and smudging to trace and reinterpret the ephemeral marks left on whiteboards. These once-erasable traces are transformed into painterly elements that challenge viewers’ assumptions about materiality and image-making.

Peng is actively involved in artist-led initiatives. In 2019, he co-founded Zit-Dim Art Space in Tainan, a platform for cross-regional exchange and experimental exhibition-making. He also co-founded Tu Xing Studio, a ceramic workshop that extends his interest in materiality and collaborative engagement.

Peng received a BFA in Fine Arts from the Taipei National University of the Arts in 2011 and an MFA in Plastic Arts from the Tainan National University of the Arts in 2014.

His recent solo exhibitions include: “The Smell of Sunshine” at the #FFFFFF Art Space, Kaohsiung (2018); “Impermanent Marks”, at A+ Contemporary, Shanghai (2016); “CANVAS”,  at the Xiang Er Art Space, Chungli (2015); “Youxian de xu xu” at the HOWL Space, Tainan (2014); “The Image of Hope” at the Tainan National University of the Arts, Tainan (2013); and “The Thousand of Pedestal”, at the Taipei National University of the Arts, Taipei (2011).
