Overview

Yowshien Kuo is a Taiwanese-American artist based in St. Louis, USA. His practice is deeply rooted in his cross-cultural life experiences—spending his childhood primarily in Taiwan and adulthood in the United States. This background informs his work with a persistent engagement with questions of identity and the intersections of cultural memory.

Primarily working in painting, Kuo’s work is characterized by flattened forms and vivid, striking colors. While visually playful, his imagery conveys incisive social critique. From an Asian-American perspective, he examines issues of race, immigration, gender, and the marginalization of minority communities. Employing humor and sometimes absurd imagery, he exposes the inequalities and alienation embedded within power structures. Kuo often inserts himself into his compositions, exploring the tensions between “illusions of power” and “escapes from reality.” He also incorporates elements from popular media, reality television, film, and art historical references, reassembling them to question concepts of authenticity, inclusivity, and ownership.

In addition to his studio practice, Kuo is actively engaged in education. He has taught at Washington University in St. Louis, Maryville University, and local community colleges, and has participated in museum education programs that emphasize interaction between art and audiences. His work synthesizes the direct visual language of folk art with symbols of mainstream American culture, reflecting on and reconstructing his Asian-American identity. For Kuo, art is not only a means of expression but also a vessel for cultural memory. Although born in the United States, he maintains a profound connection to his Taiwanese childhood and heritage while continuing to explore questions of belonging.

Kuo was awarded the Great Rivers Biennial Arts Award in 2022-23, presenting his solo exhibition “Sufferingly Politely” at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, USA. His work has also been exhibited at the Dallas Museum of Art, USA; Tucson Museum of Art, USA. In 2020, Kuo’s work was featured on the cover of “New American Paintings”, Issue 149.
