Art Map interviews Kongkee and Hang Yishu, curator of "Kongkee: Electronic Heart Beat" at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa.
gdm is delighted to share Kongkee's recent feature on Art Map. The coverage presents the artist in conversation with curator of "Kongkee: Electronic Heart Beat", Hang Yishu, and Huang Hsiao-Yen of ampost.
Hang Yishu shares her background in archaeology, and her interest in Kongkee's practice stemming from his integration of history with contemporary art. As the curator notes, "Kongkee: Electronic Heart Beat" was conceptualized from this desire to encourage appreciation of diverse forms of contemporary art, especially in accessible forms such as in animation and comics. In Japan, where animation is typically regarded as pop culture rather than as a form of fine art, Kongkee's practice sets an unconventional precedent. By introducing Hong Kong artists to local Japanese audiences, Hang hopes to expand Japan's contemporary art landscape.
Kongkee remarks on his technique and technical background in print and animation, tracing his practice back to the serialization of Dragon's Illusion's predecessorMi Luo Virtual in Ming Pao Weekly. Kongkee also highlights his love of cantonese opera as a form of inspiration, and how the actress Pak Suet Sin inspired the 'loneliness' of characters Qu Yuan and King Huai in Dragon's Illusion.
