The moth has been a recurring motif in Tang’s oeuvre. While generally associated with change, death, and rebirth, in Chinese tradition, it is believed moths embodied the spirits of departed loved ones. As such, Tang employs the moth as a memorialization of the passing of his mother, tenderly encapsulating the artist’s personal attachment for his loved ones.

In Tang's newest body of work, the moth has taken a new layer of meaning. Departing from his personal mourning, the moth begins to symbolize Tang’s artistic transformation. A moth that is pinned and contained in Tang’s personally designed frame conveys the artist’s grasp for change and rebirth, and his control over his own metamorphosis. Specimen I thus transcends memorialization, and articulates Tang’s evolving artistic practice as he embraces new chapters in his career.
