“Liu Kuo-sung: Experimentation as Method”

The Chinese contemporary ink art master Liu Kuo-Sung sat down with C.N Liew at the National Gallery Singapore to share his thoughts on Liu’s solo retrospective exhibition in 2023. The exhibition “Liu Kuo-sung: Experimentation as Method” retraced Liu Kuo-Sung’s innovation in ink art and his spirit of creative experimentation.
In the interview, Liu Kuo-Sung commented the retrospective exhibition satisfied him the most, and spoke of his encounter with notable ink painter Wu Guanzhong in Beijing in 1981 and his practices of transforming ink painting in creative experimentationLiu Kuo-Sung extended his encouragement to young artists, denoted “If you treat painting as something fun, you’ll never be stuck in conventions.” Liu’s profound philosophies and artistic practices continued to untap vast potential in the development of Chinese ink painting.
