"Losing" by Qin Chong

Encounters Sector, First Edition of Art Basel Hong Kong

A site-specific installation, made of 18 paper rolls painted not with ink but with soot. It is the traces of smoke that give each paper its own texture.

Millennium 2000 - turning into the 21st century - think of security, progress, civilized mankind, or about disasters, regression, backwardness?

The dual state of fire brings brightness to humanity as well as darkness through its destructive force, and the smoke coming from the burning process leaves beautiful signs on the paper, making visible our thoughts, fear, hope and ...?

"One-Two-World" by Lam Tung Pang

Discoveries Sector, First Edition of Art Basel Hong Kong

One-Two-World, 2013

Installation: Scale Models, Plants, Drawing and Projection on Paper

Dimensions Variable, Projection: 150 x 270 cm

Lam Tung Pang conceived this installation work during his visit to Ma Shi Po Village, a half abundant farmland at the edge of Hong Kong. The proprietor of the village has left the place to rot. Houses have been torn down, releasing asbestos, leaving the village uninhabitable. A group of young people have decided to stand up for the villagers, and they have formed a community farm as a form of protest against the skyscrapers and also the merging of the area with China under the government’s town planning. Lam has visited the area frequently and says “I am interested in how they perceive the ideas of home and living style. Could we leave a room for our city?” In this village area, the artist wishes to turn this space into an “emergency zone”, where for the artist, it would hold something that is fundamental but disappearing, both in art and in our society in general. The work reflects the response of the artist towards the unavoidable changes of the society and the world and his changing perspectives on the world, and as such, his work will continue to evolve.
