Guanyu Xu

The Asia Pivot

Guanyu Xu is featured in The Asia Pivot's "Talentspotter"!

As reviewed by Cathy Fan: "Guanyu Xu’s photographic interventions are quiet yet viscerally powerful. I still vividly recall his “Temporarily Censored Home” series (2018–19), in which he secretly transformed his parents’ Beijing apartment, a traditional, heteronormative space, into a site of queer expression by layering personal and found photographs, many featuring queer subjects. This subtle act of defiance allowed Xu to reclaim his childhood home as a space of freedom and self-identity.

"Xu has received important international grants and awards, including the Photofairs Shanghai Exposure Award and the Kodak Film Photo Award, and his work has been exhibited and screened at major institutions, including the Harvard Art Museums in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the International Center of Photography in New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the UCCA Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing.

"Xu’s work is also currently on view at several international institutions, including the newly opened FENIX Museum of Migration in Rotterdam, the Netherlands and the Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena, California."
