Stella Zhang

Nakanojo Biennale, Japan

Stella Zhang's works will be featured at the Nakanojo Biennale 2025 from 13 September to 13 October 2025.

My art expresses hidden conflicts that challenge my ability to connect to our shared struggles with power, inequality and identity. My work questions the pursuit of power in society and the value system that underpins the worldwide power system. Through my art, I question the exercise of control over others. At times, the overriding devotion to the quest for power is mirrored in our norms and selfish behaviors.

My underlying approach is the characterization of the human body and aspects of human nature. My use of expressions of the human body has a singular purpose for me. It becomes my conduit for communicating with others. This process (or what I see as the “Way”) is and based on the private interpretation of directions taken in my life.

The materials that I use in my works are familiar and ordinary fabrics that are meant to activate memories and put all of us in touch with universal fears and desires. I use fabrics that can be stretched, sewn and molded and can be transformed into a sort of second skin. The use of mixed media for me provides the freedom to move beyond traditional boundaries and eliminate the overly intimate, subjectively biased and extraneous elements.

Through a multicultural lens, my artistic language becomes minimal and organic. It incorporates Eastern and Western aesthetic concepts.
