"Stations 4" at Parsonage Sculpture Gardens

Roland Biermann's new work "Stations 4" (2025) debuts and will be permanently installed at the Parsonage Sculpture Gardens this Summer.

Like the large predecessor works Stations 1 and 2, previously shown at Barbican, London (2016), Trinity Wall Street, New York (2018) and De Hoftuin Park/ Hermitage Museum, Amsterdam (2019), the new work consists of recycled oil barrels and motorway guardrails. The oil barrels, painted in different shades of red, suggesting blood that dries, congeals and quickens again, can be seen as a symbol for the passing of life and the life cycle. On a different level, they suggest blood that is being spilt - past and present - in the pursuit of fossil fuels. The guardrails, a symbol of our still oil-driven automotive society, pierce and slice the oil barrels, suggesting an act of violence. As a reference to the topography of the local coastline, the new work, to be installed in August, will be more horizontal and elongated than previous Stations works.
