Roland Biermann's "Rheingold installation" will be featured at the Aesthetic Art Prize Exhibition 2025, presented by York Art Gallery.
Dates: 19 September 2025 - 25 January 2026
Location: York Art Gallery, Exhibition Square, York
The Rheingold installation, presented as part of Roland's solo exhibition Weisses Gold at Parsonage Gallery, Maine from 8 September - 30 November last year, has been longlisted for this year's Aesthetica Art Prize Exhibition and several documentary photographs of the installation will be screened as part of the exhibition at York Art Gallery, York, from 19 September 2025 - 25 January 2026.
Conceptually related to Ophelia and inspired by the Rheingold myth and Wagner's opera, the project explores the relationship between human greed and the amount of plastic waste in the environment. Here, the images are printed on silvery tinplate panels, combining photographic and screenprinting to a new, hybrid form. Additionally, the project has a sculptural dimension: for the solo exhibition and longlisted installation, plastic bottles, containers and other waste materials were collected in the local coastal area and packed into large black plastic bags. In the gallery, the bags were installed in a shape and form, suggesting a wave, crashing into a building.
