"Crossing 橫水“ curated by Chris Wan is reviewed by Gabrielle Tse for the HongKonger.
Hong Kong art scene stalwart gdm (originally opened as Galerie du Monde), the longest running contemporary art gallery in the city, begins the new lunar year with a showcase of nine artists with close ties to Hong Kong. Titled Crossing, the exhibition explores Hong Kong’s history, geography and human connections. It is curated by local independent researcher Chris Wan in his first collaboration with gdm. Crossing takes place as gdm celebrates its 50th birthday.
Hong Kong’s unique city landscape – an interplay of glass, light and water – plays a central role in many of the pieces. The show opens with Joseph Leung’s image series, Who Shut up the Sea behind Doors When it Burst Forth from the Womb. Frothy, shimmering, and elemental, Leung’s ocean waves set a dreamy tone for the rest of the show.
