Lam Tung Pang

"Jade Mountain" at The Crow Museum of Asian Art of The University of Texas at Dallas

Lam Tung Pang's Mountains de-bonding is displayed alongside historical jades in the exhibition Jade Mountain at the Crow Museum of Asian Art in the University of Texas at Dallas.

Mountains de-bonding is a three-part series. Each part is composed of 12 wooden panels that are 2.4 meters in height and 1 meter in width. This presentation at the Crow Museum is the second part of the series. The first part was presented at the China Institute in America from 7 March through 7 July 2024.

In his immersive work, Lam Tung Pang redefines the traditional building blocks of Chinese landscape painting. The artist created a landscape that is simultaneously real and imagined, combining motifs from a series of Chinese woodblock prints of sacred mountains. Monumental in scale, each wood panel features rapid brushstrokes that are nearly abstract. However, on closer inspection, each stroke builds up the vocabulary of a mountain landscape.

Both the historical jades and the work of Lam Tung Pang use the idiom of mountains to comment on ecological changes in the environment. Both genres invite introspection and challenge visitors to see nature anew.
