Tang Kwong San

Profiled by Ivy Ma

Tang Kwong San's mentor Ivy Ma traces his creative evolution in the last ten years and reviews his latest solo exhibition at gdm, "Rootstock." From school projects to Tang's first solo show at Hidden Space in 2020 and “Rootstock” at gdm, Ma analyzes and appreciates Tang's artistic practice.

"In his studio, there is only one oil paintbrush. I often imagine that the Tuymans-like grayscale is more or less obtained in this way - a few colors, a lot of white and a small amount of black, are mixed, absorbed and washed in the same brush, trying to “oil” it together. As for Kwong San, he has long specialized in using mechanical pencil as a tool. I don't know if it was just a matter of economy and convenience in the beginning. Perhaps it does not matter. For eight years, from 2017 to 2024, he is still using this tool. It seems that apart from restraint, he is also stubborn and determined."
