Rheingold 1 and 2, first exhibited at St. Mary‘s Times Square, New York from 14 May until 15 October last year, will be shown in the form of an immersive installation at The Parsonage, Maine. Further works include a new Rheingold projection in the outdoors area of the historic estate, overlooking Penobscot Bay as well as a selection of screen prints from snow+concrete, printed on paper and on concrete panels.
In his curator statement, Dr. Aaron Rosen says about the work: “ G. Roland Biermann's visual vocabulary often includes industrial materials, which offer compelling minimalist aesthetic while also signalling ecological distress. In this installation, Biermann uses tires, plastic bottles, and oil barrels sourced from the region, including the Searsport Transfer Station. Together, these elements - especially tires, a major contributor to microplastics in the ocean - reflect the growing tide of waste affecting the ecosystems of Penobscot Bay and beyond. In the Rheingold images, lining the walls, plastic bags float in used engine oil, their seductive sheen belying their insidious effects. In a world of forever chemicals, Biermann invites us to see value not in permanence but evanescence. ”
