Images Vevey - Biennale of Visual Arts

Images Vevey’s Biennale of Visual Arts takes place in Vevey, Switzerland from 7 to 29 September 2024, with this year’s topic “(dis)connected”, focusing on a contemporary conundrum of when unavoidable nostalgia meets inquisitiveness about an unpredictable future.

Guanyu Xu has been developing the Resident Alien series by leveraging his own experience as an immigrant to illuminate the intricate realities of those navigating the uncertain terrain of visa status and residency. The Resident Alien series will be presenting at Place Scanavin (outdoor).

In his series of work, he highlights the complexity of the migratory condition and the resilience of those who share their lives between two countries. His artistic process involves gaining intimate access to the homes of these individuals, where he captures their personal spaces and belongings through his lens. By photographing these interiors alongside the subjects' own photographic archives, Xu creates a dialogue between his artistic vision and their lived experiences

Resident Aliens stands as a compelling examination of the migratory condition, shedding light on the resilience of those who exist between places and identities. Xu's project not only highlights the profound complexities faced by immigrants but also offers a contemplative space for understanding their ongoing negotiations with belonging and identity.
