"Ton Fan Group and the Modernization of Post-War Art in Taiwan"

After the Kuomintang government retreated to Taiwan, the art reforms of the 20th century soon followed in the early 1950s. This period had a profound impact on the development of modern art in Taiwan. In 1951, artists like Li Chungsheng, Chu Teh-Chun and Lin Sheng-Yang held the ‘Modern Painting Group Exhibition’ in Taipei, introducing Western abstract expressionism and exploring Eastern ideology and philosophy. Art groups like the Ton Fan Group and Fifth Moon Group deepened the integration of Eastern and Western artistic styles, creating a unique modern art movement that continues to influence art in Taiwan and across the global Chinese art community. The lecture will explore this pivotal moment and its ongoing impact on contemporary art.
Prof. Pai Shih-ming received his PhD in Art History from Kyoto University, Japan. He is the director of the Taiwan Normal University Art Museum and a professor in the Department of Fine Arts at Taiwan Normal University. His research interests include Taiwan’s art history, the history of Chinese art and cultural exchanges with neighbouring areas.
Dr Sarah Ng is a curator at the University Museum and Art Gallery, The University of Hong Kong. She earned her DPhil in Art History from the University of Oxford. Her research focuses on modern and contemporary Chinese paintings and calligraphy. Dr Ng is interested in exploring the relationship between traditional Chinese art and contemporary practices.
