Galerie du Monde is pleased to participate in Art Central 2015, presenting ink artists Qin Feng, Lan Zhenghui, and Li Hao in the Galleries sector at Booth A4 and Stella Zhang’s "0-Viewpoint-6" site-specific installation at Booth H1. "0-Viewpoint-6" consists of an expansive installation of white, womb-like fabric tunnels and canopies alongside plush textiles phalluses.
Qin Feng (b. 1961, Xinjiang)
With Chinese calligraphy and ink brush traditions at its core, Qin Feng’s works meet the modern Western stylistic category of Abstract Expressionism. Both depend on the almost ritualistic process of applying paint or ink to the surface to express and reflect the experiences of life. For Qin Feng, whose family was constantly subjected to the atrocities of the Cultural Revolution, life’s experiences bring a wide range of emotions to his paintings.
Lan Zhenghui (b.1959, Sichuan)
Lan Zhenghui is known for producing large-scale — often monumental — abstract ink paintings. Lan draws on the Chinese painting tradition, using only black ink on Xuan paper, but diverges in his pursuit of individual emotional expression. Using varying densities of ink, and sometimes splashing directly onto the paper, Lan produces marks that convey a range of complex emotions. Favoring a freehanded approach to the brushstroke, Lan launched a “power brush” movement with his colleagues in 2000 to promote the natural sense of motion and power in ink brush.
Li Hao (b. 1982, Beijing)
Li Hao was born in 1982, and graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing. Li Hao’s creation changed significantly this year. No longer limited to figurative work, he is doing abstract imagery such as with the series “Guixiang”, “Moxiang” and “Ruo Shui”. With his works inspiring the new idea of “ink”, he breaks the rules of traditional ink printing and elevates it to the spiritual level. Li Hao uses his abstract language to paint freely and challenges the adventitious nature of ink.
Stella Zhang (b. 1965, Beijing)
Stella Zhang learned painting from her father, the acclaimed brush painter Ping Zhang, who was a professor at the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in Beijing. She received her BFA in Chinese Brush Painting from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1989. She studied Japanese Painting at Tama Fine Art University and Tokyo Art University, where she earned her MFA in 1996. Stella Zhang has relocated to the United States in 2003 and has been working and living there since. Her work has been exhibited in a number of galleries and museums in Greater China, Japan and America.
